A paradise for animals

Onlanden

North of the Leekstermeer, the Groninger Landschap owns the Oeverlanden and the Lettelberterpetten. The remaining areas in De Onlanden are managed by Staatsbosbeheer and Natuurmonumenten.

This marshy area is a paradise for many bird species. The egret is the undisputed icon of the Onlanden, but the marsh harrier, cuckoo, bearded reedling and bittern can also be found here.

The otter is a welcome guest. This beautiful animal feels very much at home in the Onlanden, but does not often show itself. In addition, a pair of sea eagles has been staying around the Leekstermeer, in the middle of the Onlanden, for three years now. The Groninger Landschap is hopeful that they will start breeding soon.

The beaver has also finally reached the Onlanden. Two beaver burrows were discovered in December 2020. This is good news because the beaver helps keep the landscape open naturally, without human intervention.
